She wore an interesting article of clothing-a red hood was on her head, but the hood stretched down into a cape. I could see her quite clearly since the sun was beginning to rise higher in the winter sky. I looked down the path without revealing myself, and I saw a girl of the age of about eleven, humming gleefully to herself. As I stood hidden on one side of the path, I was surprised when I began to scent a new scent drifting to my nose, coming from down the path. After walking for about 30 yards, I had reached a rarely-traveled dirt path, which was riddled with tufts of wild grass which had never been trampled. I walked softly, in case I encountered a bear or some other enemy. I began to walk the opposite direction from the trees that were blocking the view to that wicked woman's house. I salivated, but I knew I couldn't go over there. I could smell an irresistible scent coming from the old lady's house-she was beginning to cook her breakfast. Sleeping animals were nice and fat and easy targets. I decided to pace the area to see if there were any animals who died during the night, or perhaps I could stumble upon the den of a hibernating mammal. I leaped out of my den, fur bristling in the freezing air. The sun was beginning to rise, and soon it'll get slightly warmer and less windy. I thought as the night sky appeared to be slightly lighter. I quickly cleared my mind of Mother to prevent my face from freezing. I began tearing up, and I felt wetness dripping down my cheek. She looked at toward the women, just as a bullet was shot into her head. Mother stopped dead in her tracks, a mistake she made that cost her her life. not noticing an old lady on the house porch aiming a shotgun at her. I saw Mother chasing the rabbit, almost upon it. Even though she wanted me to stay in the den, I crept out and raced to the trees to watch.

Mother ran after the rabbit, past the trees.

It ran very fast, and ran past the trees. "I'll catch it for you and then you can eat." She got up quietly, and then pounced into the tall grass. and it's right over in that tall grass!" she exclaimed quietly. I'll catch today's meal by myself." She began sniffing, and then excitedly said, "Do you smell that?"

Mother smiled kindly and said, "Tomorrow, darling. I told her I was hungry and when she'll teach me to hunt. That's why I was so shocked when she shot Mother. She would always say the nicest things to her and be so gentle. I remember how kind I saw her be to her grandchild. Behind those trees was the house of an old, kind-looking woman. I shivered from cold AND fear at the thought. I turned my head and looked at a bunch of trees. Ever since then, I've been more of a scavenger. Mother died before she could efficiently teach me to hunt. If I started crying, my tears would freeze. I still remember her kindness, her love- I immediately stopped myself from thinking about her. Ever since Mother died, life had been so hard. Ice hung from my fur a couple of my toes were missing from frostbite. It surprised me why I didn't die from the ice and hunger. The merciless winter wind blew against my thin fur. I leaned in closer to the wall of the den as snow fell onto my nose. (This is for a contest, so this is more of a one-shot!)
